How to become a CNA in Florida
In Florida, you need a passing score on the state exam plus one of three things: an approved training program, a high school diploma (or equivalent), or being 18 or older.
- Ways to qualify
- Pass the exam and either complete an approved training program, or have a high school diploma or equivalent, or be at least 18
- Exam
- Two parts: a written test (60 multiple-choice questions in 90 minutes) and a skills test with 5 randomly selected skills
- Who runs the exam
- Prometric, the state's contracted test administrator. You apply and pay testing fees to Prometric
- If you fail 3 times
- You must complete an approved training program before you can test again
- Recent program graduates
- If you completed an approved program within 6 months of applying, you take only the written part
- Fingerprints
- Livescan fingerprinting is required before your application can be approved
Florida's yearly pass-rate reports also show results for a Spanish version of the written exam.

Florida CNA exam fees
You pay these fees to Prometric when you apply. Your application and fees are good for one year: if you aren't approved or don't schedule a test within a year, you start again.

|---|---|
| Skills test and written test (written in English or Spanish, or as an audio test) | $155 |
| Written test only (English or Spanish) | $35 |
| Written test only, audio (English or Spanish) | $35 |
| Skills test only (English only) | $120 |

- After the Board approves you, being added to the Florida CNA registry takes three to five weeks.
- The public can verify a CNA's certification on the registry at flhealthsource.

Renewing a Florida CNA certificate
Florida CNAs renew every two years, in two groups. Group 1 certificates expire at midnight Eastern time on May 31, 2027, and Group 2 on May 31, 2028.
To stay on the registry, you must have done paid nursing-related work within the last 24 consecutive months. Before you renew, complete 24 hours of in-service training during the two years, covering these topics:
- Blood-borne disease prevention and infection control
- Domestic violence awareness
- Charting care and a nursing assistant's legal responsibilities
- Residents' rights
- Communicating with people who have cognitive impairment
- CPR skills
- Preventing medical errors and promoting safety
| When you renew | Fee |
|---|---|
| On time, before your certificate expires | $55 |
| Late, after it expires | $105 |
| After a 120-day delinquency notice | $160 |
Renew online through flhealthsource ("Renew A License") or the MQA Services Portal, or by mail with a cashier's check or money order. Don't send your in-service certificates to the Board. Fees include a $5 fee to combat unlicensed activity.

Ways to pay for CNA training in Florida
Let a nursing facility pay
Federal rules say a nursing facility can't charge its own nurse aides, or people it has offered a job, for any part of an approved training program, including textbooks. If you pay for training yourself and a nursing facility hires you within 12 months of finishing, the state must pay you back for your costs, pro rata, for the time you work there as a nurse aide. How free CNA training works.

Ask your local American Job Center about WIOA
The federal Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) Adult program offers career and training services through local American Job Centers. When centers use Adult program money for individual training, they must give priority to people who get public assistance, other people with low incomes, and people who need help with basic skills. Veterans get priority in every Labor Department-funded job program. Services and eligibility vary by state and local area, so ask your nearest center whether it funds CNA training. You can find a center through CareerOneStop or by calling 1-877-US-2JOBS.

Keep your receipts
If you pay for tuition, books or exam fees, keep every receipt. You'll need them if a nursing facility hires you within 12 months and you ask to be paid back.
