The two parts, under federal rules

The CNA exam is what federal rules call the nurse aide competency evaluation. You pass it once to be listed on your state's nurse aide registry, which is what makes you a certified nursing assistant. Every state's competency evaluation has:

  • a written or oral exam. You must be allowed to choose between a written and an oral version, and
  • a skills demonstration, using tasks picked at random from a pool of tasks nurse aides commonly do, including personal care.

You must pass both parts.

Texas

  • You take a written exam and a skills exam after finishing a state-approved program (60 classroom plus 40 clinical hours).
  • Prometric handles scheduling and testing, and sends your scores to HHSC.
  • HHSC staff then issue your certificate.
